How we rank

ReviewFinder - how we rank via Meta Ranking

Meta-rankings combine expert endorsements.

ReviewFinder's formal aggregated ranking is a combination of our meta-rankings and consumer score.

Meta-rankings are a combination of all expert reviews we can find on the Internet. When present, meta-rankings are the strongest ranking signal (we trust experts more than consumers).

ReviewFinder - how we rank via Consumer Score

Consumer score is calculated from customer reviews.

Not all categories have enough expert endorsements online - in such cases we use consumer score weighted by historical brand prominence in the niche (brands that historically specialize in a certain category get a slight bump in that category rankings). Consumer score is a normalized 0-10 score based on customer reviews.

Recently we removed price form our rankings - it no longer affects recommendations. Whether to go budget or premium is consumer's choice, not ours.

Similac TummiCare HW One 800g, For 0-12 Month- Old Infants

The Similac TummiCare HW One is a specially formulated follow-on milk designed for infants aged 6 to 12 months. This 800g tin of formula offers a range of features that aim to support your baby's growth and development during this crucial stage.

One of the standout features of this product is its Easy-to-digest formula with TummiCare system. This system has been developed to ensure that the formula is gentle on your baby's delicate stomach, reducing the chances of discomfort or digestive issues.

Furthermore, this follow-on milk is hypoallergenic and lactose-free, making it suitable for babies with allergies or intolerances. It also contains EyeQ Plus with Lutein, AA, and DHA, which are essential nutrients known to support brain and eye development in infants.

What sets this product apart from others on the market is its scientific formulation without palm oil. Palm oil can be difficult for babies to digest and absorb nutrients from properly. By removing it from the formula, Similac has created a product that maximizes nutrient absorption for optimal growth.

It is important to note that while this follow-on milk provides essential nutrients for your growing baby, breastmilk remains the best source of nutrition up until 2 years old according to medical professionals.

Overall, if you are looking for a high-quality follow-on milk option for your infant aged 6-12 months that promotes easy digestion, supports brain and eye development without palm oil inclusion then Similac TummiCare HW One could be worth considering.

What is the Composition of Infant Milk Formula?

Manufacturers of Infant Milk formula usually mention varying components of the infant milk formulae that they release. Usually the formula is designed to be based on what a mother’s milk will be like at about one to three months postpartum. These projections mean that the most popular infant formulas in the Philippines are composed of cow's milk whey that has been purified, as well as casein as their sources of protein. Lactose is used as the source of carbohydrates, and then there is the addition of other ingredients for vitamins and minerals, based on each producer.  As mentioned earlier, these ingredients are not static and vary from producer to producer. This is why you could find, for example, that soya bean is used as the protein source in certain infant milk formulae.

In general, infant milk formulas usually contain a combination of the following nutrients no matter the source: Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate, Linoleic Acid, Phosphorus, Calcium, Sodium Chloride, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Copper, Vitamins: A, C, D, E, K, amongst others.

Why Infant Milk Formula Instead of Cow Milk?

Many parents ask why they have to use formula and not just cow milk for their babies. The answer to this is that infants find it difficult to digest cow milk completely, whereas they find it far easier to digest formula. Apart from the issues of digestion, cow milk also contains a high concentration of minerals and proteins that can stress the kidneys of infant children. This can result in severe illnesses for the infant

Furthermore, cow milk is lacking in iron and other minerals in the quantities that are needed by the infant, this may indeed lead to iron-deficiency anemia in some babies since cow's milk protein has the ability to irritate the lining of the intestine and stomach. Cow's milk also lacks the healthiest types of fat for growing babies.

Can You Breastfeed and Give Formula?

Yes, you can! The practice of giving your child Infant milk formula alongside breastfeeding is referred to as supplementing. This practice is completely safe and okay to do. Many mothers combine formula with breastfeeding for reasons ranging from low breast milk supply to convenience.

For What Reasons Can You Breastfeed and Use Formula?

There are many reasons why families or medical practitioners decide to supplement breastfeeding with formulas. Here are a few:

Where your baby has medical issues

If a baby is born prematurely or the baby has certain peculiar medical conditions, there will be recommendations for the mother to use both breastfeeding and formulas. This is especially done when there is a need for the baby to gain weight.

Where you have a low supply of breast milk

If, as a mother, you have a low supply of breast milk, it is the recommendation that you supplement with infant formula so that the baby can get all the quantities of nutrients that the baby needs to grow.

Where that is what you want

The truth is that you don’t need to have any special reason for wanting to supplement, you can just decide it is the way you want to nurture your child! As we mentioned earlier, it is completely safe to supplement so there are no consequences.

The reasons for supplementing can also include the fact that you need to go back to work, or that your partner wants to participate in feeding the child.

What Should You Check Out Before Picking a Formula?

Before deciding on a formula for your baby there are certain things that you need to check out such as the formula Basics, the formula Form, and the degree of additional nutrients contained in a formula.

Formula Basics

Here, you are checking for the base ingredient that is used in the manufacturing of the infant milk formula. There are usually two major ingredients that may be used as the base ingredient depending on the manufacturer. The first is cow milk, which is the most commonly used and the least expensive type. Infant milk formulae that are based on cow milk are most commonly picked by parents except where there is a recommendation otherwise by their pediatrician. The other common ingredient is soy milk. It is the go-to for vegan formulas; it is deployed usually for environmental or ethical reasons

There is also lactose- free Infant milk formula that parents can consider in making their formula choices.

Formula Form

Now that you know what base ingredient that you want, the next thing to consider is the style of the formula you are picking. You want to pick the style that is easy for you to prepare for your infant. There are three major styles used in the formula:

  • Power Form: This is the least expensive and most commonly used style of formula. Here, you simply prepare the formula by mixing the powder with water in a cup or feeding bottle.
  • Liquid Form: As the name suggests, this formula is in liquid form but requires that the liquid be mixed with an equal amount of water. It is usually more expensive than the powdered form of formula.
  • Ready- to-use: This form of formulae does not require preparation. The formula has already been prepared and packaged in a feeding bottle. It is however quite an expensive form of formula.

Additional Nutrients

By now, we assume that you have narrowed down your options to a couple of formulae. The next thing to check is the additional minerals and nutrients that the manufacturers have included in their formula. There are different combinations used by different manufacturers, but you should watch out for the following: Iron, Docosahexaenoic acid/Arachidonic acid, and Prebiotics/Probiotics.

Can your Infant Switch Between Different Brands of Formula in the Philippines?

Switching between different brands of infant milk formula is not a problem. The truth is that many different brands use the same ingredients in their production. The important thing is to gauge which formula your baby responds to better and maintain that brand or switch to it. This means that you can switch between formula types within a brand. As long as you follow standard instructions for mixing, your baby will be fine.

Do Infants Notice Change in Formula Brands?

The main issue here is taste. Some babies are particular about the taste of what they eat and so will notice the difference in the taste of two different brands of formula. This of course will usually mean that they will prefer one taste to another. However, it must be noted that even in breast milk, the taste of the milk changes based on the mother's diet, this means that babies may not mind the taste.

If your infant tends to notice taste and prefers one formula to the other, you should remain with the brand he prefers, especially if its nutrition content is adequate.

What Formula Is Best for Breast-Fed Babies Prefer?

For babies that are partially breastfed, you must get an infant milk formula that is rich in Iron. This kind of formula is usually referred to as an iron-fortified formula. Formulae with base ingredients as cow milk are usually richer in Iron.

Does Infant Milk Formula Give Infant’s all the Nutrients Required for Growth?

One of the major myths about infant milk formula is that formula is inferior in terms of nutrients to breast milk. While of course there may be slight differences between both, formula contains all the nutrients that are required for the growth of a baby. In fact, babies that are fed with formula grow more quickly than breastfed babies in the first year. Formula production is closely monitored to ensure that all the necessary nutrients are included.

Is Infant Milk Formula Safe?

The answer to this is Yes, it is safe. However, there are sanitation practices that must be carried out by the mother to ensure that the entire feeding process is safe and hygienic for the baby. It is the absence of these that increase the health risks of infant milk formula.

What Safety and Sanitation Practices Help to Keep Infant Formula Feeding Safe?

  • Throw out any left-over formula and ensure that you sanitize the feeding bottle after every feeding. The combination of Saliva and infant formula can cause the growth of bacteria.
  • Ensure that you store unopened infant milk formula in cool and dry places
  • The moment you have opened a formula, every storage must be done with the lid properly closed. It should also be in a cool and dry place.
  • Never use a formula beyond the date that it was stated to be used. You can check the formula immediately you get it and write down the date it should have been used.
  • Wash and sanitize your hands through the entire preparation and feeding process.

Pay attention to all these and you do not need to worry about your baby falling sick as a result of formula feeding.

What is the Cost of Infant Milk Formula in the Philippines?

The cost of formula differs from one brand to the other. However, you can expect that the best prices fall between 671 Peso and 2000 Peso. You could of course find brands with formulae less expensive than 671 Peso or more expensive than 2000 Peso, depending on the kind of formula, its form, and usage.
